SPOKANE, WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – A series of wildfires around Spokane have resulted in the destruction of at least 700 structures, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders for approximately 67,000 individuals. The Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview fires have collectively scorched over 8,000 acres since Saturday. As of Monday night, officials reported no fatalities or serious injuries. More than 1,000 firefighters remain engaged in suppression efforts, safeguarding neighborhoods within Spokane County. Fire response teams have classified the incident among the country’s most urgent wildfire priorities.

Driven by powerful winds and dry conditions, the fires in eastern Washington expanded from open terrain into residential districts along Spokane’s northern border. The Old Trails Fire crossed the Spokane River, reaching northwest communities within hours of ignition. Homes, businesses, vehicles, and utility infrastructure across multiple communities suffered damage from the flames. Infrared imaging suggested potential harm to hundreds more structures, though confirmation was pending. Smoke from the fires has cast a haze over Spokane, reducing visibility near active fire zones.

On Monday, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci on suspicion of first-degree arson. The suspect’s arrest is linked solely to the Old Trails Fire, which originated near Old Trails Road and Euclid Avenue. A court will determine whether charges are filed, and such allegations do not imply guilt. Investigations into the origins of the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires are ongoing. Authorities have stated that no additional arrests related to the Spokane wildfires have been made.

    Spokane County Evacuation Zones Widen

Large areas of northern and northwestern Spokane, along with neighboring communities, have been placed under evacuation orders. Emergency officials relocated patients from the Mann-Grandstaff Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center as the situation worsened. The city of Spokane activated its convention center to serve as a shelter for displaced residents and their pets. Local community groups are providing food, water, and essential supplies. In addition, authorities coordinated emergency child care, road closures, and public information efforts to support those affected.

Governor Bob Ferguson of Washington declared a state of emergency and authorized the activation of the National Guard to assist with firefighting operations as the fires expanded across eastern Washington. This declaration facilitates better coordination of personnel, equipment, and emergency resources across impacted counties. A statewide burn ban remains in effect amid ongoing heat and drought conditions. Resources from various state agencies and external firefighting teams have been mobilized, with officials also requesting federal assistance to meet the high demand for firefighting support across the Pacific Northwest.

Firefighters Focus on Protecting Residences and Critical Infrastructure

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources has joined forces with local and federal agencies in managing the Spokane Complex fire response. Aircraft have been used to drop retardants, while ground crews deploy engines, hand lines, and heavy equipment near vulnerable homes. Efforts are also underway to safeguard roads, transmission lines, hospitals, and water treatment facilities. As of Monday, fire managers reported no containment around the three fires in Spokane County. Road and park closures remain in effect, including restrictions at Riverside and Mount Spokane state parks.

The fires have caused damage to power systems, leaving thousands of residents without electricity in the initial days of the emergency. Utility crews are working to restore power where feasible, while emergency teams continue to keep hazardous areas off-limits. Residents are urged to adhere to evacuation notices and refrain from flying drones near firefighting aircraft. Emergency management teams maintain updated maps and alerts as fire boundaries evolve. Damage assessment teams are actively surveying affected neighborhoods and verifying property losses before releasing comprehensive totals.
