Moderna begins human testing of a Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine during the DR Congo outbreak. The research will be conducted at three locations in Canada, enrolling approximately 80 healthy adults. The primary objectives are to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and immune response induced by the vaccine. Because this is a Phase 1 study, it will not establish whether the vaccine prevents infection, as the focus is on early safety data. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations has allocated up to $50 million to support preclinical development, the clinical trial itself, and the production of additional research doses. As of July 30, WHO reported 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths in DR Congo. By that date, at least 651 patients had recovered. Updated figures provided by CEPI on August 4 indicated the number of infections had surpassed 3,800, with death tolls exceeding 1,700. Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak. Both cases occurred prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the Michigan deaths on Aug. 3, characterizing them as fatalities related to cyclosporiasis involving individuals with pre-existing health conditions. The total case count from Michigan includes all reports during the investigation period and remains subject to change. Federal surveillance data primarily encompasses laboratory-confirmed cases and may differ from state figures, which also account for probable illnesses. A federal investigation is underway into a nine-state Cyclospora outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms de Mexico. As of July 24, nine states had documented 1,947 cases of infection, with many reporting exposure to Taco Bell. The count also notes at least 98 hospitalizations. Onset dates of illness ranged from June 22 to July 20. The CDC later included Michigan’s two deaths in their report, which had not been reflected in the detailed federal totals published on July 24. Recall involves iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico Taylor Farms de Mexico withdrew all iceberg lettuce originating from central Mexico from the U.S. marketplace. The recall covered multiple food-service items and Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce products sold at select Walmart stores. The expiration dates of affected products ranged from July 18 to Aug. 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed the impacted lettuce to 27 states

DR Congo expands its Ebola response as cases rise across five affected provinces. Currently, cases are spread across 49 health zones within Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo. During the latest seven-day period, active transmission was reported in 33 zones, with a total of 641 cases and 282 deaths. Ituri remains the epicenter, accounting for 3,176 infections, which makes up 88% of the national figure. Bundibugyo virus disease spreads via contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, organs, or contaminated materials. Symptoms typically develop between two and 21 days after exposure. Patients are not contagious prior to symptom onset.
