WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – U.S. President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi convened at the White House on Tuesday to discuss expanding economic and energy partnerships. The talks concentrated on American investments, oil extraction, natural gas, and power infrastructure development. Trump indicated that the United States intends to pursue numerous commercial agreements with Iraq and highlighted that American firms would play a leading role in Iraqi oil initiatives. Neither side disclosed specific project valuations, commercial arrangements, or timelines following the discussions.

During his first official visit to Washington since assuming office in May, Al-Zaidi led a high-level Iraqi delegation. Iraqi officials stated that the visit addressed issues related to trade, investment, technology, transportation, and energy. Baghdad is eager to involve more established American companies in major development projects and seeks cooperation in healthcare, education, and petroleum products. Officials described the meetings as part of a broader strategy to forge tangible economic partnerships between Iraq and the United States.

Energy cooperation was a key focus of the agenda. Iraq is seeking investment to boost crude oil production, develop natural gas resources, and enhance its electricity grid. The cabinet recently directed the oil, electricity, and communications ministries to prioritize qualified U.S. companies. Additionally, Iraq’s North Oil Company signed an agreement with HKN Energy to develop the Himreen oilfield in northern Iraq, covering oil and gas extraction following technical and commercial negotiations with Iraqi authorities.

Oil and Power Projects Dominate Bilateral Discussions

Electricity cooperation also played a significant role in the talks. Iraq authorized its Electricity Ministry to finalize a broader cooperation agreement with GE Vernova focused on generation and transmission infrastructure. The company already supports several Iraqi power projects, turbine upgrades, and grid improvements. Past agreements included maintenance of power plants and measures to increase generation capacity. Baghdad emphasizes electricity supply as a top public service priority, given the rising demand that strains the national grid.

Oil exports and increasing production capacity were also discussed within the economic context. Iraqi officials expressed that upcoming energy agreements would facilitate additional export routes and support higher output levels. Iraq primarily sells its crude via Gulf shipping routes and remains heavily reliant on petroleum revenues. The government has called for more connections between Iraqi fields and Mediterranean export markets. Al-Zaidi reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to OPEC, asserting that the country deserves a fair share of production within the group.

U.S. Investment Grows Across Iraq’s Energy Industry

Iraq possesses some of the world’s largest proven crude reserves and is a founding member of OPEC. However, production growth is constrained by infrastructure limitations and the OPEC+ supply framework. Baghdad aims to increase capacity while adhering to its international commitments. Companies such as HKN Energy, Chevron, and GE Vernova have been involved in Iraqi energy projects or discussions. Chevron has engaged in talks regarding West Qurna 2, one of Iraq’s largest oilfields, and other potential developments.

The Washington discussions also explored broader economic ties beyond oil and electricity. Trump and Al-Zaidi examined opportunities in trade, telecommunications, technology, infrastructure, and private sector investment. Iraqi officials indicated that the delegation included senior government representatives overseeing economic and security matters. The two governments did not release a comprehensive list of signed commercial agreements but confirmed that energy investment and broader economic collaboration were the main topics of bilateral dialogue.
