The 2,758-TEU PanStar Acro departed from Busan New Port around 9 p.m. on August 22. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries verified the departure and issued the schedule for the voyage. The vessel will navigate through the Northern Sea Route before making port calls at three locations in Europe. This 45-day round-trip voyage is planned to conclude in Busan on October 5.
PanStar Line Dot Com manages the vessel, which is carrying 837 TEU during this Arctic shipping trial. Of this, approximately 737 TEU comprises commercial cargo, including chemical substances, used vehicles, and automotive components. The cargo also includes 100 empty containers. The vessel is expected to reach Arctic waters around August 30 and complete this segment by September 7. Officials estimate the Arctic portion of the voyage to cover roughly 6,400 kilometers.
According to the official schedule, the ship is set to arrive at Felixstowe in the United Kingdom on September 9. Rotterdam in the Netherlands will follow on September 11, with Gdansk in Poland scheduled for September 15. Afterward, the vessel will return to South Korea via the same Arctic route. The distance from Busan to Rotterdam along this planned route is approximately 13,000 kilometers. Throughout the voyage, operational data will be gathered to assess performance and efficiency.
Commercial Cargo Transported to Europe During Trial
Prior to departure, the captain and navigation officers received specialized training specifically for polar waters operations. An experienced polar navigator, who previously served aboard South Korea’s Araon icebreaking research vessel, joined as chief officer. The preparations also included securing insurance, outlining emergency procedures, and completing administrative requirements for the voyage. Authorities conducted consultations with relevant nations and organizations before departure. A 24-hour communication system will keep the ship connected throughout its Arctic passage.
This voyage represents South Korea’s first Arctic route trial with a container ship. Although Korean shipping companies have previously operated vessels such as bulk carriers and tankers along Arctic routes, this is the first such operation involving a container vessel since 2016. Unlike previous tests, this voyage carries actual commercial cargo rather than conducting an empty demonstration run. The preparations for this voyage started earlier in 2026 through a public-private council dedicated to Arctic shipping initiatives. The participating carrier was chosen via a public competition held in May. Subsequent steps included ensuring vessel readiness, cargo planning, crew composition, securing insurance, and establishing emergency response protocols. Administrative procedures necessary for international navigation were also completed. These efforts culminated in the August departure from Busan, setting the stage for the planned passage over the northern waters above Russia.
The government classifies this journey as a trial rather than a routine container service. During the round trip, data will be collected on sailing distance, travel duration, fuel usage, and operational costs. The project aims to assess cargo demand and other practical aspects of container transit via Arctic routes. The scheduled European port calls will enable both commercial cargo transfers and navigation testing.
