GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / RankWire.AI / – The World Trade Organization is set to host its inaugural World Trade and Tech Day on September 14 at its headquarters in Geneva. This event aims to gather trade officials, technology policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders. The central theme, “AI and Trade: Turning Potential into Progress,” will steer conversations on artificial intelligence and its impact on global commerce. The discussions will emphasize policies that broaden access to AI tools while promoting more inclusive international trade practices.

WTO trade and tech day puts inclusive AI policy in focus
World Trade and Tech Day will put inclusive AI policy at the center of global trade talks.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General, will commence the event with opening remarks. A ministerial dialogue will explore why artificial intelligence has become a significant issue in trade policy. The agenda also features a keynote speech and a panel discussion with private-sector representatives. Topics will include digital services, intellectual property, technical standards, and the role of developing economies within AI-related value chains. These sessions aim to connect technology policy with the practical needs of cross-border commerce.

A key resource for the meeting will be the World Trade Report 2025. According to WTO modelling, artificial intelligence could boost global trade by as much as 37% by 2040 and increase world gross domestic product by up to 13%. The extent of these benefits will depend on infrastructure, skills development, technology adoption, and policy frameworks. The report also highlights that unequal access to AI could hinder participation among lower-income economies.

    Trade policy takes center stage

Several panels will investigate how AI can reduce the costs associated with international trade. Attendees will evaluate tools that assist businesses in document processing, compliance management, and supply chain analysis. Discussions will also cover digital services and intellectual property rights. Additionally, a session will focus on how technical standards can facilitate compatibility across different markets. These topics highlight the increasing role of AI in customs procedures, logistics, finance, and other trade-related services.

Barriers hindering broader AI adoption will also be addressed. Many enterprises still lack reliable internet connectivity, sufficient computing power, skilled personnel, and affordable financing. Smaller firms often face additional legal and technical hurdles when accessing digital markets. The WTO’s small-business group examined these issues during a June dialogue on AI and trade, reviewing how emerging tools can enhance market research, reduce operational costs, and improve access to trade information.

Showcasing AI applications for international trade

An exhibition showcasing artificial intelligence applications relevant to global commerce will be part of World Trade and Tech Day. A pitching session will feature tools tailored for companies, public agencies, and trade organizations, illustrating how policy debates translate into practical AI solutions. Demonstrations will focus on AI-driven supply chain analysis, regulatory support, and market data access. This format aims to provide attendees with tangible examples of AI systems already contributing to trade operations.

The September 14 event will be held at the WTO headquarters in Geneva. Its agenda combines ministerial discussions, input from the business community, policy analysis, and technology demonstrations. The focus will be on artificial intelligence, reducing trade costs, digital services, and promoting economic participation. Infrastructure development and skills enhancement necessary for wider AI adoption will also be examined. Details about registration and online participation are available on the official event webpage.
