LAHORE, PAKISTAN / RankWire.AI / – As Pakistan grapples with renewed inflation pressures, consumers in Lahore are experiencing significant price differences for essential foods compared to government notifications. Despite official rate reductions, many retail markets have not aligned with these prices. This week, notable gaps appeared in the prices of chicken, vegetables, and fruits. The rising costs are burdening households amidst a double-digit national inflation rate and escalating fuel prices that intensify daily expenses.

Officially, chicken meat is priced at Rs461 per kilogram following a Rs22 reduction in the notified rate. However, Lahore retailers are charging between Rs520 and Rs570 per kilogram. Potatoes, with an official range of Rs27 to Rs30, are sold at Rs50 to Rs70. Tomatoes, officially listed between Rs130 and Rs180, are available at Rs250 to Rs300. Onions, despite a notified cap of Rs175, are sold at Rs200 to Rs220.

Similar disparities are observed among other vegetables. Spinach, with an official rate of Rs57 to Rs60, can cost as much as Rs120 in markets. Farm cucumbers are officially priced at Rs85 to Rs90 but reach up to Rs150 in retail. The gap in fruit pricing is even more pronounced, with authorities listing some dates between Rs310 and Rs435 per kilogram, while retail prices fluctuate from Rs800 to Rs2,400.

Inflation accelerates amid rising fuel prices

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data reveal that consumer inflation hit 11.1% in August, up from 9.2% in July. Urban inflation registered at 10.4%, with rural inflation at 12.2%. The agency’s weekly price index increased by 8.62% from the previous year for the week ending September 10. Onion prices surged by 125.52% year-on-year. Meanwhile, LPG prices rose by 55.42%, diesel by 45.26%, petrol by 39.10%, and wheat flour by 30.18%.

In response, the federal government approved a targeted fuel relief package on September 14 through the Economic Coordination Committee. Under the scheme, owners of eligible two-wheelers and three-wheelers will receive Rs500 weekly. Car owners with engines up to 800cc will get Rs1,000 for each 10-day period. Assistance is limited to non-commercial users and one vehicle per owner. The Ministry of IT and Telecom will oversee the digital Fuel Pass System.

Educational disparities highlight ongoing development challenges

Pakistan’s official social metrics reveal persistent gaps in education amid the rising cost of living. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics reports a national literacy rate of 63% for individuals aged 10 and above. Male literacy stands at 73%, whereas female literacy is at 54%. Urban areas have a literacy rate of 74%, with rural regions at 55%. Punjab’s literacy rate is 68%. A significant 28% of children aged five to 16 remain out of school nationwide.

Government data shows that federal and provincial education expenditures reached Rs962 billion in fiscal 2025, representing 0.8% of GDP. According to the latest household survey, Punjab’s out-of-school youth rate is 21%. While these figures do not directly link education levels to Lahore’s retail pricing disparities, they underscore another key development obstacle. Meanwhile, Punjab authorities continue releasing official market prices, which consumers in Lahore find to be significantly different from actual retail charges reported.
